Key Dates and Materials
Background
The AESO is currently reviewing both the EWG and public survey responses and will share the results with the Minister of Affordability and Utilities once complete. Once the review is completed the next round of engagements will be posted and advertised through the AESO Stakeholder Newsletter.
The purpose of the EWG session was to level-set the background of the REM report, to hear initial thoughts on the design elements of the REM and to get thoughts on the engagement process going forward.
The AESO provided the REM recommendation report to the Minister on January 31, 2024. We kicked off the REM recommendation report engagement with a two-day EWG and SME session on April 22 & 23.
Fall EWG Background
AESO to provide their recommendations on market incentives, design and role of new dispatchable technologies to Minister on January 31, 2024
We are engaging senior industry leaders to gather your perspectives and insights for consideration as we formulate our recommendations.
Timelines are truncated; we are pivoting to meet report deadline
These are complex issues – it will take an investment of time to identify areas of common ground and we may not fundamentally agree or align on all issues.
This process is a collaborative engagement – AESO needs to retain flexibility to coordinate with other agencies and MAU to ensure a consistent and comprehensive policy outcome.
We will not be able to share our final recommendation report with you in advance of providing it to government, and ultimately government will decide how that report will be considered. To the greatest extent possible, we will advocate for transparency in accordance with our engagement principles.
Purpose and Objectives
- Gather insights to assist the AESO in executing its recommendation report
- Understand senior stakeholder views on future market design and framework options
- Identify areas of common ground, and those areas in which we may not fundamentally agree or align in our thinking
- Enable all of us to speak to government with a common language and understanding
The AESO will articulate to the government what we hear from you and your organization throughout the process. This is your opportunity to influence policy direction on the future of electricity in Alberta.
