Market-Based Fast Frequency Response

Important Dates & Materials

May 14 | Stakeholder Information Session registration

Purpose

We are preparing to launch the procurement of Market-Based FFR to meet the requirements outlined in the amended Transmission Regulation, Alberta Regulation 86/2007, and the ancillary services provisions in the Energy and Utilities Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 52).

Background

FFR is a fast-acting reliability service that helps arrest and recover from frequency decay following system disturbances, such as the sudden loss of imports or internal generation. Its use increases available transfer capability (ATC).

The AESO has engaged stakeholders since June 2025 on FFR and is pursuing two procurements for FFR to meet its regulatory obligation: FFR Plus and Market-Based FFR. Market-Based FFR is developed as a recurring competitive procurement that reflect attributes of a real-time market and leverages existing load, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and other capable technologies.

Additional information on Market-Based FFR will be shared here in May.
