August 27 | Stakeholder Update
In accordance with the Funding Process, the AESO has determined that each of Alberta Direct Connect Consumer Association, Canadian Renewable Energy Association, Consumers’ Coalition of Alberta, Energy Storage Canada, Industrial Power Consumers Association of Alberta, and WiSDM Energy Control Inc. are eligible to receive funding from the AESO for participation in the REM Rules Engagement. The AESO Determination of Eligibility and copies of applicant Eligibility Application Forms have been posted.
The AESO has determined that each of the eligible Market Participants may obtain funding for participation in the REM Rules Engagement by submitting to the AESO a completed summary and supporting documentation referred to in the Funding Process no later than 30 days after the AESO announces the completion of the REM Rules Engagement.
August 20 | Stakeholder Update
Stakeholder Eligibility Application Forms were submitted by Market Participants by the July 31, 2026 deadline. Following a review of the applications, the AESO determined that additional information was required from certain Market Participants to support the eligibility assessment process.
The AESO requires additional time to complete its determination of eligibility in accordance with the AESO Process - Funding for Participation in the REM Rules Engagement.
Accordingly, instead of posting its Determination of Eligibility by August 21, 2026, the AESO will post its Determination of Eligibility on or before August 28, 2026.
June 26 | Stakeholder Update
The AESO will be providing funding for eligible market participants who require financial support to meaningfully participate in the AESO’s engagement on the REM ISO Rules, scheduled to commence in September 2026, and to continue until April 2027.
The AESO previously provided funding for eligible market participants to participate in last year’s REM engagements. Funding for this year’s REM Rules Engagement will follow the same process.
Market participants who were previously eligible for funding in last year’s engagements will need to re-apply to be eligible for additional funding.
Posted today are the following:
- AESO Process – Funding for Participation in the REM Rules Engagement;
- Eligibility Application Form – AESO Funding for Participation in the REM Rules Engagement; and
- Cost Claim for Participation in REM Rules Engagement Form.
Submissions for eligibility must be submitted through AESO Engage by July 31, 2026.
Please email stakeholderrelations@aeso.ca with any questions.
Purpose
The AESO previously provided funding for eligible market participants to participate in the AESO’s 2025 REM design engagement and 2025 REM rules engagement.
The AESO has decided to provide additional funding to market participants, or associations of market participants (to a maximum of $50,000 per market participant) to enable their ongoing participation in the AESO’s upcoming 2026 and 2027 stakeholder engagement on implementation-related revisions to the REM ISO rules.
We understand that some market participants may not have sufficient funds to support their participation in the upcoming REM Rules Engagement. Revisions to the REM ISO rules will not initially be subject to an Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) proceeding and approval process, through which similar funding would otherwise be available.
Market participants who were previously eligible for funding in last year’s engagements will need to re-apply to be eligible for additional funding.
Funding for the upcoming REM Rules Engagement will follow the same process as the funding previously provided for last year’s REM design and ISO rules engagements. Please refer to the 2026 funding process documentation that can be found in the AESO Materials section for further information.
