Electromagnetic Transient Modelling Requirement Updates

Engagement Outcomes

The amended versions of the EMT implementation materials have now been posted to www.aeso.ca.In April 2024, the AESO made some administrative amendments to the related EMT materials to align the documents with the Energy Storage Amendments to the ISO rules, which became effective on April 1, 2024 (AUC Decision 28176-D01-2023).

The stakeholder consultation on EMT modelling has concluded, however the AESO invites stakeholders to contact us at rules_comments@aeso.ca if they have any other EMT related questions. Thanks to everyone who participated in the process.

Purpose

The AESO is developing new electromagnetic transient (EMT) modelling requirements as part of a series of actions to preserve the secure and reliable operation of the future power system, as outlined in the AESO’s 2023 Reliability Requirements Roadmap.

As part of implementing the EMT modelling requirements, the AESO will be amending its Project Data Update Package (PDUP) and the following Information Documents:

  • ID #2010-001R – Facility Modelling Data and List of Electrical and Physical Parameters for Transmission System Model
  • ID #2017-013R – Model Validation and Reactive Power Report Guidance

The AESO will be consulting with stakeholders and hosting an information session to review the proposed changes and to provide stakeholder feedback.
