Grid Readiness, Integration and Performance (GRIP) Requirements: High-Level Overview

ISO Rule Compliance

Operational Requirements

Introduction & Purpose

The Grid Readiness, Integration and Performance (GRIP) Requirements address reliability challenges with the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). They provide risk-informed performance criteria and technical assessments for connection projects.

The requirements inform interested parties planning new projects about the requirements and IDs they can expect to:

  • Reduce unexpected compliance issues and operational risks during project energization
  • Improve efficiency in execution phase of the AESO Connection Process

Note: While the AESO will review study reports as a courtesy, its focus will remain on study scope and assumptions. The AESO will not assume legal liability for these reviews.

Initial GRIP consultation with transmission facility owner (TFOs) began in 2025. The AESO is seeking feedback on the implementation timeline of these requirements and the regulatory pathway. Feedback is open until June 11, 2026.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Following the June 24 Information Session, applicable requirements will be identified based on project risk and added to Functional Specifications (FS) for relevant connection projects with an in-service date (ISD) after December 31, 2026
  • Over the next few years, the AESO will transition new performance criteria into Authoritative Documents (AD) and guidelines into Information Documents (ID)
    • Formal industry consultation will support this transition

*The details in this table are subject to change based on business priorities and stakeholder feedback.

  • Purpose

The AESO is seeking stakeholder feedback on the Grid Readiness, Integration & Performance (GRIP) Requirement guidelines, which outline risk-informed performance criteria and technical assessments for connection projects. Specifically, we have identified questions for input on:

    1. The proposed GRIP Requirements implementation into functional specifications, where applicable, based on in-service dates (ISD) of connection projects by December 31, 2026.

    1. The prioritization of transitioning GRIP guidelines into Authoritative Documents (ADs) and Information Documents (IDs), starting with lower complexity and progressing to higher complexity.

We value stakeholder input and invite all interested parties to provide their comments on, or raise any concerns with, the proposed amendment to the “inflexible block” definition.

    Materials

View the Functional Specification Implementation and AD/ID Development Priority Table prior to providing feedback, which can be found in the AESO Materials section. (*Note that the details in this table are subject to change based on business priorities and stakeholder feedback)

    Instructions

    1. To submit your responses, you must be registered and signed in on the AESO Engage platform.
    2. Please click on the "Submit Stakeholder Feedback" box below to begin the survey and provide your specific comments.
    3. Please submit one completed survey per organization.
    4. All responses will be shared on AESO Engage.
    5. Responses are due by June 11, 2026.

    Stakeholder Questions:

Based on the proposed Functional Specification Implementation and AD/ID Development Priority Table, please provide comments on the following:

    1. Are there any missing topics from the GRIP Requirements, including technical assessments to be standardized or performance criteria to be introduced?

    1. Do you have any concerns with the AESO adding GRIP Requirements in applicable connection project with an ISD after December 31, 2026? Please provide your preference with rationale.

    1. Do you agree with the proposed AD/ID development plan based on the order of complexity from low to high? If not, please explain why.

    1. Do you believe the release of GRIP requirement guidelines can benefit your businessIs there anything we should include or exclude? Please provide your rationale.

We value stakeholder input and invite all interested parties to provide their feedback on the GRIP Requirements Guidelines implementation framework development through meaningful engagement via the following form by June 5, 2026. Please provide specific examples with your responses.
